Few coastlines are as instantly arresting as the Lofoten Islands. Jagged peaks rise straight from the sea, scarlet fishermen’s cabins line sheltered harbours, and white-sand beaches fringe water the colour of the tropics — all of it lit, in summer, by a sun that simply refuses to set.
We come here for the drama and the contrast of the seasons: the midnight sun and hiking of summer, or the northern lights and snow-dusted peaks of winter. Either way, you stay in restored rorbuer cabins right on the water’s edge.
Trip highlights
Reine & the rorbuer
Stay in a red fisherman’s cabin over the water in one of Norway’s most photographed villages, ringed by peaks.
Arctic beaches
Haukland and Kvalvika — improbable stretches of white sand and turquoise water beneath snow-touched mountains.
Light, day or night
The midnight sun in summer, the aurora dancing over the peaks in winter — the islands deliver both.
